I deleted all of my social media accounts when I went to Thailand to teach English in 2014. On a school break, I spent ten days creating a "Facebook Wall" in my bedroom, featuring the faces of my friends and family members. None of them, of course, could see the Wall in person. I sent them images of the Wall over email, and they sent me messages telling me how much they liked it. Like a real Facebook Wall, it provided all of us with instant gratification and an ultimately hollow sense of connection.
